What do we want from our computers? Most likely it’s a seamless experience that will get us what we want as quickly and easily as possible. We are all guilty of taking what we want from our computer and never giving anything back and still expecting a fantastic experience. Like all relationships, selfishness can be a killer and computers are no different. With a little TLC you can have that laptop purring like a kitten in no time. So for the day that’s in it here are a few tips on showing your computer the love.
Be Nice to Your Battery
Generally speaking laptop batteries will only last for a few years. It’s important to not leave your battery charging all the time. When the battery is fully charged be sure to unplug the power cable. You should also charge your battery fully before unplugging the power cable, and also use the battery fully before recharging.
Perform Regular Software Updates
It’s easy to skip software updates because they can take time out of your busy day and may not seem that important. But this is a mistake that keeps the door open for hackers to access your private information, putting you at risk for identity theft, loss of money, credit, and more. Software updates keep your PC running smoothly. Updates generally contain fixes for bugs and glitches as well as enhanced security features.
Use Antivirus and a Firewall
Speaking of security it’s important to use an antivirus program that’s updated. It can be costly both financially and personally if your computer were to get a virus or spyware. You will want to ensure that any confidential information you may have on your computer is protected and an antivirus software is the best way of keeping your data safe.

Defragment Your Hard Drive
Defragmenting may sound like a daunting task but it really is very straightforward. If you use a PC, you should defragment your hard drive regularly as this will ensure that your computer runs much faster.
To access your Disk Defragmenter:
Click Start→Control Panel→System and Security.
The Administrative Tools window appears at the bottom.
Select Defragment your hard drive.
Choose the Analyse Disk button. A drive with 10% or more fragmentation should be defragmented.
When the analysis is complete click the Defragment Disk button.
Once completed click close.
Get rid of old files you don’t need anymore. Use Disk Cleanup to delete temporary files, files in the recycle bin, and other files that you no longer require.
To use Disk Cleanup:
- Open Disk Cleanup by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Disk Cleanup, and then, in the list of results, select Disk Cleanup.
- If prompted, select the drive that you want to clean up, and then select OK.
- In the Disk Cleanup dialog box in the Description section, select Clean up system files and follow the steps.
So if you follow these steps you are truly showing your computer the love and it will repay you by being well on the way to being the efficient and well run machine you always wanted it to be.
